FAQs

Best way to find out is to call us or to complete the contact form. We will do a desktop feasibility survey on software and work from there. If we do not have direct LOS we have two options;

  1. Investigate options to bring up a new high site in your area, should there be interest,
  2. Install your link via a partner network

After a successful desktop feasibility, we will schedule a physical LOS test/installation. Unfortunately, tree’s and buildings cannot be catered for in desktop feasibility.

Installation normally occurs within 3 days of order.

That is correct, we do things differently. When we have spare capacity on the network why not share it with our customers? The bandwidth has already been purchased and not using it is essentially losing it. So we share with clients. Depending on the load your available bandwidth will be in line with the service you purchased and the contention ratio, but when network load is low your bandwidth will also increase. So, don’t worry about the extra speed, enjoy it. You will only be billed for the speed you signed up for.

Yes, the router we install is wireless capable. We can turn this on or off depending on your need. Should you want to extend your coverage inside your house or business we can install additional wireless devices to achieve your desired coverage.

Normal home indoor AP’s are not monitored. If you require extensive solutions with multiple AP’s we can also enable full management and monitoring of these devices.

No, we do not. you are billed a flat monthly fee. We do have a fair use policy and should you go absolutely mad and it is interfering with other clients we may ask you to slow down or to schedule such activity at times of low network utilization.

When we installed your link you would have received a service introduction document with all the details. If you do not have it anymore please complete the “contact us form” and we will send you the copy sent to you originally. This document explains who to contact, including the escalations procedures.

You can also always send a mail to our support or use the contact form on this website.

Yes, when you apply please ask for this and we will schedule payment terms for the once off payment.

All our high sites have backup power installed that will keep the service operational for about 8 hours on power failure. Larger sites have Generators.

We do not provide UPS’s to clients, but you can buy one from us if you need. So, as long as your house/business remains operational during power failures your Gironet Internet connection will also.

By default no we do not. We have a service where this can be done should you wish to protect your business or family from aspects of the Internet. Please contact us for more information.

We provide a firewall service with all our packages. You do not need any additional firewalls on our home / small business packages.

Should you have specific firewall requirements please contact us for a manged solution.

We implement different contention Ratios;

  • 16:1 or 8:1 for Home or Residential Customers (depending on package)
  • 4:1 for Business Customers
  • 1:1 (or Uncontended) as required

We also have a unique feature where we do not just have optimum contention ratios applied to ensure customers achieve their subscribed speeds, but we allow bursting higher than the subscribed speeds when general network utilization is low. This means you may get up to 3 times your subscribed speeds at certain times. (your 2Mbps service may perform at 6Mbps at times)

The lower the Contention Ratio is the higher the price will be. Some ISP’s will sell a dead cheap service at a high contention ratio, meaning the service is highly contended and actual speeds achieved by customers may be are far lower than advertised.

Through our experience we have found the above contention ratios the optimum for home and business customers.

Contention Ratio is defined as the ratio of the potential maximum demand to the actual bandwidth. The higher the contention ratio, the greater the number of users that may be trying to use the actual bandwidth at any one time and, therefore, the lower the effective bandwidth offered, especially at peak times.

So if you have a 10Mbps service at a 10:1 contention ratio your Maximum speed will be 10Mbps and your Minimum speed will be 1Mbps.

See the Wikipedia page on Contention Ratios for more information.

Yes, we do. IPv4 is available on request but IPv6 is usually given by default.
